What is document Attestation?
Attestation is a process by which documents are made to be recognized in a foreign country. It is a process of verification or validation of the authenticity of a document.

Commonly Attested Documents
Is document Attestation known by any other name?
The process of attestation is commonly referred to in Canada as “Authentication and Legalization” and may also be called “Apostille” in other countries. As Canada is not signatory to The Hague Convention, we do not have Apostille or Attestation, but rather an equivalent, two step process of Authentication and Legalization.
Attestation of Canadian Documents
The first step in the process, authentication, is a verification of the signature of the official executing the document. This authentication is performed by Global Affairs Canada (formerly Department of Foreign Affairs) in Ottawa.
Some documents will need to be notarized before commencing the attestation process. If you are unsure of the requirements particular to your situation, please do not hesitate to contact us.
The second step in the process is referred to as legalization. This is a verification of the signature of the Canadian authority that has authenticated the document. This step is performed by the Embassy, Consulate, or High Commission of the country in which the document is to be presented after attestation. Once this step is complete, the document can be used and recognized as valid in the country for which it has been legalized.
How long does the process of Attestation take?
Attestation of Canadian documents can be a long process if attempted without the help of an attestation service or process server. According to the Global Affairs Canada website, documents submitted by mail can take “approximately 25 days” to be processed. Transit time and attestation at the Embassy could add another month to the total if done by mail. This is of course assuming all documents are in order and nothing is missed.
